Introductions pt 1: Buttons

This is Buttons. He's almost 11 months old now. He's the bestest boy. He was a rescue; we got him in late May of 2021. Absolutely no idea what mix of breeds he is. He's got heavy pit legs, a long body but a very slim middle and a tail that swoops down and then hooks up like a whippet. He's a perfect size for our small house--he's about 22 lbs now, and hasn't changed much in the past couple of months, so we don't expect him to get much bigger.

From the first day we brought this baby home, he's been super protective. On the second day we had him, we were playing in the back yard with him when our neighbors went to leave for work, and he stopped playing, turned and sat between them and us and didn't move until after they were gone.

For the holidays, Child has asked if she can sleep on the pull-out couch with Buttons and I agreed. Normally, he sleeps in his kennel in an alcove in the hallway between my door and the bathroom, and when I get up in the middle of the night he doesn't make a peep. When he's sleeping with Child, apparently he's feeling like he has a job to do, because when I get up to pee he barks at me unless I call a stream of reassurances to him before I open the door.

We took him to the dog park for the first time yesterday, and he was so incredibly good. He's on the submissive side with other dogs, even smaller dogs. He made friends and played on the edge of the pond and got dunked by a huge german shepherd. And then he slept for the rest of the day.
