(no subject)

Paid $20 co-pay for the doc to say "Yup, you cut it pretty bad" and to have a nurse show me how to rebandage the wound.

If it doesn't stick to the wound tomorrow I'll consider it money well spent.

I took substantial amounts of skin off various limbs this summer, and what kept the damn bandages from sticking for me was smearing the wounds themselves with the antiseptic goo and one side of the gauze with Vaseline and sticking the Vaseline side onto the antiseptic goo. (Of course that meant when the ace bandages decided they didn't feel like staying put, the gauze pads tended to fall off too...)

Telfa non-stick wound pads are teh bomb. :) That and ointment, with lightly-wrapped gauze over that and paper tape to hold it all together. I like to tape the corner of the Telfa pad directly to un-damaged skin to keep it from slipping around.

Corner, hell, I had to tape three or four sides of the pads on my legs to get them to stay put for me once the scrapes healed enough for me to move more than ten feet at a time. The ones on the arms cooperated better.

Also, modern science says this is bad, but once I got a ton of minor scrapes when I was about 15. My grandmother put a cap-full of LySol cleaner in a bathtub of warm water and made me soak and not a bit of it got infected.

That sounds like it'd hurt like hell. And these were not minor scrapes--I don't know how fast I was going when I hit the concrete, but it was pretty damn fast, and I left about a square foot of skin on the concrete.

Ooh, ouch.

I don't recommend the LySol because it isn't a chemical you should have in your bloodstream, but it was actually very soothing on the wounds. A lot better than Mercurochrome or peroxide would have been.

(looks up Mercurochrome. Oh, look! Contains Mercury. My childhood was a "what not to do" of medical treatment).

Oh man, that is one of my pet peeves--paying a doctor to just nod at your wound and kick you out of the office two minutes later with no good advice. Hate hate hate hate hate. Feels like such a waste!

I mean, it's not like you want some magic medicine, but I am betting you would have at least liked a bit of discussion on why the wound was not as horrific as thought or something.

*sigh*

I always seem to be telling my main dr what's wrong. And she'll say "Oh that can't be it" and then run a bunch of tests and in the end it's what I said in the first place.

I'm very disillusioned by the medical community right now.

i hope the bandaging goes well from now on and you heal up quickly!

it's been much better now. No more hideous sticking to the bandage with painful screaming pulling off.

Honey also works, and is anti-bacterial too. grin.

That's a great idea. It won't dry out in about 12 hrs?
