Dark Angel Question

So. Those guys with the snakes and all that?

Um, what the heck was their deal? I mean the big plan that Max was supposed to be the only one that could break it.

In 100 words or less would be plenty. 25 would be great. Because I don't really care, I just need to write around it in a futurefic, maybe.

I'm not sure they ever explained it. Step one, survive snake bite ... step three, profit?

(In the tie in novels, it's explained as some big plague thing that will hit with an astroid or comet, and Max's blood/DNA holds the key to saving humanity from said plague, which the cult were all immune to as a result of those centuries of breeding or something.)

(Or so I dimly recall.)

[identity profile] taniapretender.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Big plan was apocalypse. The death of human kind, so the Familiars would rule on earth ( they considered themselves a higher race or something ). Big thing was, there was Familiars just about everywhere, including in Politics; So they had the power to control. There. :)

[identity profile] diane-mckay.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
A detail that you might find important is that Sandeman, the creator of all transgenics, was a familiar. One of his sons wouldn't survive the apocalypse so he created transgenics and specifically Max to defeat the cult's evil plans and save all humankind!

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But wasn't Sandeman's son like--just a few years older than Max, and younger than say, Joshua? He was the crazy man who was trying to pass himself off as an x5, right? Or am I way confused?

[identity profile] diane-mckay.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
No you're right. Whoever said canon was consistent? Besides we don't really know how old CJ (the son) or Joshua were.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Still. I have been reassured by this conversation that canon is so screwy that I will not be lynched if I deviate from it, and may in fact be appreciated for deviating from it. :)

[identity profile] diane-mckay.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing of true importance that you must remember is that Alec and Ben are very, very pretty. :)

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So very pretty. Oh yes.

have you read the first little Ben/Alec (ish) thing I wrote? It's under my DA tag.

I just--twins. I broke something in my brain with that. Broke in the good way.

[identity profile] diane-mckay.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Loved it. Alec being offended that Ben wasn't hard was awesome! But you know after he heals...

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I can work with Familiars in positions of power. That can be interesting. Hrm.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Awesome. That helps a lot.

[identity profile] domina-malfoy.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the one thing about the show that bugged me... We didn't learn much about them in season 2. I guess more was going to be revealed in season 3 wich they never got to.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Makes writing futurefic a little tricky, but I think some of the concensus I"m getting is that if I just ignore the big plot nobody will be that upset.

(as long as you keep writing Dark Angel fic, nobody will ever get upset)
LOL

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Okay. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

[identity profile] lomer.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
A long time ago, a virus came that wiped out most of the Earth's population. Those that survived were immune. They basically figured out a way to pass on that genetic trait to their children. They began old fashioned breeding programs to create genetically desirable kids who would be immune once the virus came back (in season three or so). That's what the snake bloody thing was.

Manticore kinda ruined it for them, because they created all their kids with the immunity. Max was special though because she was given the cure for everyone. Apparently something was going to happen in season three where she caught the equivalent of a cold and every time she sneezed, she was spreading the cure so when the comet with the disease came, everyone would be immune.

At least this is what the commentary from the dvds tell me. I honestly never cared about the breeding cult.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Awwwwesome. Okay. That's perfect.

I never cared about the breeding cult either I just thought I should have a better clue in case it was one of those things that cannot be ignored or something (or actually useful to my plot, which I never counted on).

[identity profile] lomer.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Ben! *hugs your icon* That's the scene that always broke me in the Ben episode. "I'm a good soldier." Jensen Ackles is just too damn good. He makes me all teary eyed even while sharing scenes with "I'm pretty, but I can't act" Alba.

And now back to the topic! The Breeding Cult can pretty much be ignored, unless you WANT to play with the Familiars. And sometimes that's fun because they're EVERYWHERE. I really didn't care too much about them though. The only reason I know anything about them is I watched the commentary on the dvds. I wanted my Alec backstory dammit!

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I may use the Familiars somewhere but probably not their big plan thing. I'll assume Max screwed that up before the attack on TC. So. The cult is still around but nobody's vulnerable to the illness thing. I can deal with that.

[identity profile] myfieldnotes.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Did Alec have more backstory in the commentaries? I haven't heard them and now am curious. I always hoped there would be more.

[identity profile] lomer.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
I WISH they had more backstory. They did clarify a few things (apparently all the guys in the office thought Alec slept with Rachel while the female writer insisted "she's a nice girl! They just kissed!") and they constantly sang the praises of Jensen... but very little Alec backstory. Mostly speculation of what they wanted to do in Season Three. Apparently there was going to be more of the Alec/Max/Logan tension.

They did say one thing that struck me as odd though. One of the writers commented on Alec and the transgenic movement during the last episode. She said he was probably going to leave in a few hours, but for the moment he was sort of proud to be one of them. He's too much of a loner to really stick around though.

I disagreed whole-heartedly with that statement. From what I'd seen of the character's progression, it looked like he was figuring out what "family" meant. He had a taste of it and was willing to give it a shot. I wouldn't be surprised if he occationally disappeared, but I'd be shocked if he left a few hours after raising the flag.

Oh and one cool Jensen story from the dvds. Apparently Jensen really learned how to play those piano pieces from the Berrisford Agenda. They hired a hand double, but ended up not using him. Everyone was very impressed. Apparently Jensen is awesome. *g*

[identity profile] myfieldnotes.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for the information!

I agree that it seemed to me that Alec was just figuring out what family is. He seems to so clearly need it and yet be wary of that need. Perhaps what they had intended, or what I would hope they would have done, is that he becomes a bit overwhelmed by what he's experienced in that final episode and does a sort of circle out, circle in, even if he really wants to stay because he's not quite there yet (kind of like a wild creature approaching a person for food and comfort).

That Jensen learned to play the piano is awesome. It's silly stuff like that that makes me happy.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
(kind of like a wild creature approaching a person for food and comfort).

I see this exactly. Opening himself up has never worked out well for him, so it couldn't be easy. Oh, Alec, hiding behind those walls.

also, just in case this is your sorta thing, I wrote a very short jensen RPGen fic about him and the piano. Rated G

[identity profile] lomer.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I would completely buy Alec acting like a wary animal, but the writer acted like he'd leave just because he's sort of a jerk. And I like your analogy of Alec and a wild creature. I think it really fits. Instead of biting, he snarks as a way to keep people from getting too close.

When I saw Alec playing the piano I was very impressed with whatever hand model they used, because it was seamless! It really looked like Alec was playing the piano. And then I find out it looked so fantastic because Jensen actually learned the pieces... I'm definitely impressed. *g*

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, I've got a tiny little RPGen fic with Jensen and a piano...
http://ladyjanelly.livejournal.com/tag/rpgen

I really don't see Alec leaving. If he was gonna leave, he'd have never gotten so close. He could have done better alone than with the other transgenics at any point in season 2. Safer, richer, more free, more sex drugs and rock&roll. It would have been bad characterization if they'd done that.

I agree with you that he'd probably float around, not too close at first but never too far.

[identity profile] lomer.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay more stories! *puts that link away to be read later*

I'm not sure how much time had passed between cancelling the show and recording the commentaries. I'm sure that whatever words and actions the writers gave Alec, Jensen Ackles would have found a way for it to work in character. He's one of those actors who's amazing at created layered characters no matter what sort of crappy line he has to say. ... but I do think it would have been sloppy character development. It's one thing to have him freak out a little and take a step back. It's another to have him just decide to abandon everyone so he can find more hookers and blow.

[identity profile] realpestilence.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've no idea about any of that, my grasp of canon is shaky. But 2 things I do know:

1) I would PAY you to write Logan/Alec, Joshua/Alec, or Ames/Alec for me. (Not much, ok, but...*counts shekels*...something!) *cries*

and

2) There's a couple of good fics by jaguarcaine that I love to rec to anybody with even the vaguest interest. One is 'Gettin' Busy' at http://jaguarcaine.livejournal.com/2249.html ; and the other is 'Chimera', at http://jaguarcaine.livejournal.com/4238.html . FYI. *coughs*

Pesti

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Awwww. Would you take Ben/Alec instead?

[identity profile] realpestilence.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose I can bear it. All that Pretty, together...well, now. *perks up*

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
*seconds the Logan/Alec*

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
In future fic? I tend to ignore it because it was a bad storyline. However, I try and get out of the virus if I can too.

But I'm pretty sure they never really explained it so you could write it off as crazy people jumped on PCP or something.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. What can ya do when Canon's that stupid.

Yeah, for the most part I'm ignoring those guys.

Logan/Alec can be sooo cool. I just never got the spark to write it myself.

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about DA, is that the characters are fun, but the plotlines, the writing and the acting are just so bad in places, that the fanfic can fix those little problems and be so much better. Plus...fanfic does have the p0rn, which is never bad.

Just leave 'em, they sucked anyhow. You going to share this plot bunny of yours?

You didn't? Well that sucks. There are loads of great potential fics for Logan/Alec. And I've read all the ones that I haven't written which is kinda sad. You just need the right bunny.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-24 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ben's like my crazy little DA muse. I have yet to write anything without him.

It's not a major bunny. Just a continuation of the Ben/Alec (ish) thing I started a while ago. Not exactly sure where they'll end up yet.

Ben/Alec/Logan? I think I just hurt something in my brain. In the good way.

[identity profile] sidura.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
A continuation of the Ben/Alec thing - please tell me you aren't teasing people here *bites nails anxiously*

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 1000 words in. Not teasing. :) It may not be soon though. I dunno where I"m trying to take it. Besides the future.

[identity profile] sidura.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you are writing it that is all that counts, I suppose that I'll have to be happy that hopefully the next part of Another Tom Sawyer will be ready soon? (not fishing at all here ;))

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
There actually is a Ben/Alec/Logan fic out there on the vastness of the interweb. I did read that one. I seem to remember Logan being very happy about the situation though. Lots of energy was...focussed on him.

Ben was sweet in his psychopathic killer ways. I might need to go write Ben at Manticore fic now. (Got more than one of Alec.)

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. I can imagine it being a very intense position to be in.

Oooh, I'd love Ben at Manticore fic. That would be awesome.

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It can be, but taking one for the team, he struggled on. ;p

*grins* Your wish is my command. Any particular bunny? Not that I can promise it'll be any good, but...

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ben telling stories in a happy moment before Jack got the shakes?

Or maybe Ben sees 494 (but 494 doesnt see him back)?

I'm reading your "in the shadows" verse. Very cool. Such a complicated situation.

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's good, bunny has bitten in a similar train of thought to that one. ;p It's kinda creepy though...

Would you believe we started the In the Shadows verse to write kinky sex? And then got 20,000 words in before there was nakedness. All of this plot just sprang up from nowhere. *sighs* It baffles, but thanks, it's good to know people like it. DA is a small fandom so feedback is kinda rare.

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-28 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*whistles innocently* Short Ben fic (with small guest appearance of 494) is with the beta.

Ben is cool to write at Manticore. Will have to try again.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-30 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
OOOohhhh. I can't wait. Awesome.

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so where are these Alec-at-Manticore fics? I didn't see them under your da list in your masterlist of fics...

[identity profile] loki-dip.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
*grins* You've been looking? There are only two that I've posted.

Good Soldier - http://krazykipper.livejournal.com/72830.html
Skin for Scars - http://krazykipper.livejournal.com/106328.html (Which got the most FB I've ever had. *beams*)

[identity profile] cetpar.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Delurking for a minute. I've been reading "In From the Cold" and enjoying it, but I've been bad about commenting. Hi!

Anyway, I just recently started watching S2 of Dark Angel because of Jensen Ackles, and I've been trying to find fic. I didn't realize you had written some. I just read your Ben/Alec story and really enjoyed it, and I'm happy to hear that you're in the process of writing another.

Since you like Ben and Jensen---the Dark Angel writer who created Ben talked about Jensen's audition in her blog. You may have already seen the post, but in case you haven't and are interested: http://tightropegirl.livejournal.com/8725.html

[identity profile] ladyjanelly.livejournal.com 2008-01-27 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome. I loved how he sat like he was handcuffed on the floor.

He's just an amazing person, and amazing actor. Everything I ever hear about him off-screen just makes me love Jensen more and more.

Have you read the Sam and Ben spn/da crossover? It's under the Tom Sawyer tag if you're interested.
There's also a quick jensen-plays-piano fic at the rpsgen tag.
