Hi! In service to your awesome project, I present the fruits of my research. Raleigh, NC, is exactly 12 hours from Miami. It's not superbig though with a population of about 350,000. I thought I'd compare crime rates with Dallas -- it has WAY less crime than Dallas. Still, there were 19 Murders, 1325 Aggravated Assaults, and 1006 Vehicle Thefts reported in 2006. So it seems like there's enough crime there to fit with your story. The cities of Charlotte and Winston-Salem are both about 2 hours from Raleigh (Charlotte 2hrs47mins, Winston 1hr47min), and both cities could be home to an Architect and his Wealthy Family.
Feel free to use or not use as you see fit. Also, North Carolina as a Southern State is similar in manner to Texas -- or at least my Texan friends are not greatly dissimilar to my friends from NC. So you wouldn't have to make Jensen's mom and sister too Northern.
