I called animal control to come get our neighbor's cat today.

Yesterday when Sam and I were coming home, it ran across the alleyway between their house and ours (our back driveways are across from each other).  It's front leg was obviously broken--just dangled there as it ran.

We went over and knocked on their door.  The guy was like "Yeah, it's ours.  It's foot's been like that for a while.  My wife's gonna take care of it."

The cat was still running around today when I got back from lunch with a friend.  If I wasn't so pregnant and the cat so skittish I would have been tempted to steal it and take it to the vet and keep it.   But we can't have another cat with the baby on the way and the vet would have been closed by the time Sam came home to drive me and I REALLY can't give another cat the attention it needs.  I didn't know what else to do so I called animal control.  I figured since it had been hurt for so long it was probably going to end up eaten by a dog or coyote or put to sleep anyway and I just couldnt stand it suffering any more.

I still feel really bad.

You're doing the right thing. It obviously needs help. Just a heads up: some animal control agencies won't chase down cats, so you may need to find a box or something to put it in if you can.

Wow. People do suck. You did the right thing. Hopefully it will go to someone who going to take care of it.

You did the right thing by helping it the only way you could. I don't like cats as a rule, but I wouldn't be able to watch one suffer either.

You totally did the right thing. I can't imagine that poor thing having to go around with his leg like that "for a while"?!?! How can they let that happen?!? Is it safe now? Did animal control come for it?

Yeah, some people suck for sure; a few months ago our neighbors across the street moved, taking 3 of their 4 dogs with them but leaving one behind. We thought well maybe they just didn't have room for it and will be back in a day or so, as they'd left some things behind in their carport as well; but DAYS passed and this dog was still in their back yard, which has a chain link style fence so we could see it in there. My son went over to see if the dog had food, and it had a big old iron plate thing which they had apparently dumped a whole bag full of dog food in and also had water in a kiddie wading pool. Well, MORE days passed and we got up one morn and that dog had dug its way out of the yard and was roaming the block; we felt terrible that we'd forgotten about it for several days, and when my son went back to their yard, he found that the food was long gone and the water was all nasty and stagnant and slimy. The poor dog was so hungry it finally dug its way out to find food. It wasn't fully grown, was part boxer and part pit bull and when my son tried to corral it before it got hit by a car, it snapped and growled at him and ran off with its tail between its legs. I was going to call animal control and my son (who is 24) begged me to give him another chance to catch it and see if he could calm it down and feed it. He just felt some strange affinity for it and argued that since it's part pit bull the shelter would likely just put it to sleep. So he managed to coax it into OUR back yard with some cheese, and at first it growled at him and cringed in fear, sigh; but in a very short time my son had that dog cavorting like an eager puppy and just slavishly devoted to him. He named it Zero, because he said what some people might see as worthless can be a hidden gem or priceless. So we ended up keeping the dog, and about two weeks later those neighbors returned for the last of their stuff and came to borrow our phone. They saw Zero in our side yard and said, "Hey, that's OUR dog, what are you doing with our dog?" My son said "Are you effing kidding me? You left that poor dog shut up in that yard for almost a MONTH." And that lady goes, "Well, we left it a big bag of food..." and my son was like "OMG! Which it ate in less than a week, and you expected it to last for a month, and besides, you just ABANDONED it..." He asked her why they only took the other dogs, and she said well their new yard didn't have a fence and the other dogs would stay without a fence and not roam but Zero wouldn't; so he said well then where do you plan on putting him if you take him today? and she just shrugged and said she didn't know. Then she had the nerve to try to force my son to BUY the dog from her or she would call the cops and say we stole it. So my son said he would get all the neighbors as witnesses that the dog was abandoned and running wild and so on and get HER in trouble for animal cruelty/neglect. So she sniffed and said well she guessed they didn't really need another dog anyway and we could keep it. Geez. She and two of her four kids went over to the fence and tried to talk to Zero and/or pet him, and he growled at them and cringed like he had been mistreated by them and was scared of them. So. Our little, sweet lasa apso dog Sally passed away from cancer last summer and I did NOT want another dog, at least not a hyper, high-strung, high-energy dog like the one we now own, ha; but Zero and my son are best buds now and that dog is SMART. My daughter started doing commands with him like Sit and lie down and roll over, etc. and after seeing the hand signals just 3-4 times, that dog would do the commands instantly. He is still too aggressive to strangers and we are working with that, as I do NOT want a 'guard dog' type dog; but he has a new home here and is insanely attached to my son and to the little plastic squeaky toy my daughter bought him for Christmas; you can hear him outside sqeaking it all hours of the day and night, ha, and he won't leave the yard without it in his mouth, he freaks if he can't take it with him.

Never feel bad about something like that.

If the cat could talk, it'd say thankyou, I'm sure.

People like your neighbours scare me. Cause you can't imagine how they treat that cat from day to day. Or any other animal they may have.

Good thing you saw the poor thing.

Well done you.

Irresponsible pet owners suck!

There's a new kitten running around that I'm INCREDIBLY tempted to adopt except I'm insanely allergic to cats and I'm moving to New York in a few months and it seems sort of cruel to uproot a cat like that especially to a small crappy apartment where I don't know if I'll have free time to take care of him.

You did the right thing. If animal control won't help, try the ASPCA.

Great story - starting horribly and ending wonderfully. Check out Cesar Millan (dog whisperer) if you haven't. Good for you and your son for saving that poor dog! I just hate people like that and wish them only the worst.

If you can't keep him, at least nab him and take him to PAWS or another (preferably no-kill) shelter!

you totally did the right thing.

poor kitty is lucky you have compassion in your heart even when you are stressed out.

this is my new bunny Tina whom I got from Rabbit Rescue Society. Don't worry about calling a rescue -- the resdue folks do the work of going to the shelter because not everyone has the wherewithal to do that.

Most people suck as can be seen just by observing your society at large. Did you ever consider that this cat might reflect something that your neighbors are experiencing? Our surroundings, people, events, conditions as well as the animals we choose and condition they are in, are reflections of ourselves. We are currently going through a Global economical melt down. Most vets, at least those I have come across in my area, are outrageously expensive. Can they afford the expense? If not they should defiantly look for help. A pool of cash from several people might help them as well. Your outreach is commended and well needed. I do not believe I would contact animal control or the SPCA, however. They typically will put the animal to sleep! There are however many animal outreach centers and individual people that will take on animals from baby birds (which I once found and took in) to a cow. These people are much more caring and devoted to the animal then the government agencies. Best wishes too you and good luck with your expectancy! Girl or boy?

you did the right thing last year i caught 3 dogs in the area and sent them to shelters (had to call animal control on one though it was ferocious).

It really is disgusting that your neighbors would let their pet be like that for days.

So don't feel bad hopefully it will get a new loving home.

Wow what a crazy woman to leave her dog for a month in a back yard. Glad it turned out for the best for Zero.

Sorry for the random comment.
