Not to say that I'm not planning on finishing all the WIP's, if they get voted on or not. I fully intend to. Just need a little more push.

Date: 2005-11-20 07:28 am (UTC)BTW, I took a look at those links you posted in your last entry. Just heartbreaking. I knew about the English exporting all the food and such during the famine and letting the Irish starve, but I had no idea about the slavery.
It was just as bad as what the African slaves were subjected to, and yet I've never heard tell of it until now.
The capacity for cruelty and greed that humans have never ceases to

Date: 2005-11-22 10:29 pm (UTC)Re: the slavery thing -- I was a little weirded-out when I started the research because one of the first sites I hit was a "White heritage" site, and those tend to be too mission-driven for me to consider it a good resource. Then I hit a site for the mixed Irish/African people still living in Barbados and it talked about the same issues, with great research and comments from contemporary sources.
It blows my mind how things get white-washed and distorted by history, how the victor gets to write the history books and gloss over the suffering of a staggering number of human beings.
I wonder how the average non-slave Irishman would see things in that time-period. Would it be like most Americans see homeless people? That mix of pity, disgust and thank-god-it's-not-me? Would they see them as kin? And then if I threw Connor and Murphy in the mix, I can't imagine any evil greater than the slavery (both black and white) issue, and that's so beyond two men's ability to fight.
Anyway, thanks for letting me babble at you.
Oh, you have high-speed internet now, yes? Want me to yousendit some of that stuff I can't get put on DVD?
