Shows you should watch: Future Man on Hulu
Jan. 5th, 2022 09:25 pmOkay. Hear me out. I started watching this show and I was like "This is crass. And cheesy." But it was good enough to finish the first couple episodes.
And then I noticed that it's crass and cheesy but oh is it good too. It's a very smart show about very stupid people, performed by incredible actors.
The premise is familiar. Soldiers from the future enlist a 'normal' 20-something video-gamer from the suburbs to travel back in time and prevent the apocalypse.
What isn't so familiar is how much the show lets the characters grow and change. I am so weak for someone raised for war being told that they're made for something else, that they have value beyond their kill count. A hard-ass getting the first hug of their life. Another tossing aside the mission imperative at the first whiff of unconditional kindness.
There's a mistaken identity scene that stretches for like 15 minutes, and makes perfect sense for every single character involved (like--7 people, I think?) are all sure they know what's going on and every single one of them wrong).
Canon Queer characters. In a big way.
Canon Poly relationships.
Season 3 is on the surreal side, but it didn't lose me. The story all wraps in a very satisfying end.
I can't think of a scene where a woman's body being objectified is treated as anything other than creepy/annoying/unacceptable.
Bonus fun, picking out all the easter-egg references to all the other time-travel movies.
Drawbacks: it will make stupid shows about smart characters a lot less fun to watch. It deals so well with the paradox and futility of time travel. Also a drawback--there is almost no fic for it at all.
Content advisory that it really really lives up to the TV-MA rating. There is like a 15 second long shot of two men comparing their penises, completely on screen.
Has anybody else watched any of this? Thoughts? I'm doing a re-watch now, I'm on like episode 6 of season 1.
