Subtle can be very rewarding; it makes a reader feel clever when she "gets" it and like part of a secret club of witty people (a small, select membership!). *grins*

The "knee-slapping" type of humor tends, imo, all too often towards the scatalogical. I'm no big fan of potty humor, which is why I HATE most so called Hollywood comedies.

One of the funniest movies I've seen in the last few years was the animated 'The Incredibles'. It was so *real* in how it portrayed a family, struggling through emotionally difficult times, that it makes you identify with these cartoon superheroes and not see it as silly.

Then I turn around and watch some excrescence like 'Me, Myself, and Irene'-which had a great deal of potential to be hysterically funny, considering the stars-and I was embarrassed, humiliated, and ashamed to be in that audience, much less from the same country that produced the piece of crap that was going to be viewed world-wide. *shudders*

So, yeah, subtle is good. It's GREAT!
