Here's some pics of the side yard with the area where the stupid stump was, and the rose bushes that are going like the energizer bunny this year. Don't ask what makes them so happy. I have no idea.  We didn't do a single thing to them this year. The pole in front of the roses is one that the clothes line is attached to, to give you an idea of our laundry-time view. :)

Apparently roses love Texas.

In florida, if you could get roses to not-die and make a rose it was a big deal and a sign of hard-core dedication to teh pretty.

In Texas they just grow unless you try to kill them.

In Vermont roses do fine for like 3 days then all die. Its like a suicide pact they make. It was depressing.

You have to get roses with Florida-bred root stock, they breed 'em special for the climate here. Smaller, family nurseries are good places to get them, though I think most any garden center carries the easy-to-grow "Jackson" line and many of the classic roses that grow almost anywhere, like Tropicana or Mr Lincoln.

I miss my rose garden. *sighs*

Those are the supports for the covered porch. So the laundry line is covered. No fear of bird poo. :)

It's an awesome place just to sit and watch the cats play (we only let them outside when we're watching them in the enclosed space of the porch).

Oh, now that's smart! I stopped hanging laundry out in the yard for that same reason. Now I hang it on the balcony that's covered.

And roses won't thrive for me either :-(

Clearly it's a texas thing. They've never grown for me anywhere else.

I like being able to take the laundry out in my bare feet and walk on the porch to hang it up too. Bare feet are awesome.

stupid community thing.

Like fannishliss says, try drying racks. You should get away with that.

You know, it's been a long time since I grew roses, but I seem to recall they grew better every other year. I remember they also like to be pruned, too.

Ah. We did cut them to get at some weeds in them last fall...I'll have to remember that.

I've heard that Texas is one of the places where Heirloom Rose Hunters go to hunt -- like you can find these hundred-year-old varieties growing out behind abandoned houses and such. I guess this is why!

I had a beautiful red good smelling rose named Chrysler Imperial but it died after only two years. Boo. Yours are very beautiful!!

I hope your laundry hanging is going well. I've never had a birdpoo incident, knock on wood! but today there were many caterpillars. It was a perfect day, about 80 degrees, and the laundry, mostly pants, was bone dry in about two hours.

For those of you living under EVIL covenants, try racks! We use racks in the wintertime. I haven't owned a dryer in about eleven years...

Ooooh, we did see some old ones when we were doing some recreational trespassing and taking pics of old houses down in south texas. Wish I'd gotten better pics of the roses themselves now.

I've got three roses we planted that arent' getting enough sun that I need to move this weekend, but they should transplant okay.

Ugh, the catepillars drove us off the porch last fall. I swear I'm getting that tree taken out as soon as we have the money.

They are beautiful and such a lovely colour. Roses grow really well in england, but I don't have any in my garden.

We used to have a huge cherry tree in the middle of the lawn, but it had to be cut down as it was dying (was very sad) and after the birds had chomped on all the cherries we used to get blobs of pink birdie poo on the washing!

Bare feet, oh yeah gotta do the bare feet thing especially in the summer, nothing like the feel of hot flag stones under your feet and soft grass.

Jane:)

Ewwww. Pink Poo. That's no good at all.

I love bare feet. I wish the world was a cleaner and safer place. When I was a kid I'd only put on shoes to go in the store during the summer. I could walk across anything without getting hurt.
