Piffy had his first experiance with a pee-spraying bug yesterday.

Poor thing. At least it got him in the mouth and not his eyes.

He ran around in panic and pain in the little side yard until I could catch him.

I hollered to Kendra to turn on the sink and I rushed him in and he was foaming at the mouth.

I tucked him under my arm and scooped handfulls of water into his face/mouth and he struggled like a wild thing.

It got the spray out though and he was better when it was done.

In all that struggle, I had one shallow scratch from a back claw on my back and not a single mark from a front claw. I'd been wearing a t-shirt.

Clearly Piffy loves his mommy.

ieeee! Toxic pee-spraying bugs! I'm happy to say that that's something we seem to be lacking here in Missouri.

Poor Piffy.

It was eeeeevil. Poor Piff was so surprised.

I am still amazed that he didn't scratch me with his front claws at all. He was hurt and scared adn getting a surprise bath and he still didn't fight me as hard as he could.

He's fine now. Just has a little of a weird smell.

He's stopped crying to go outside though. :)

He smells a little funny but not too strong. :) He's okay. No permanent damage. Poor little guy was so surprised. Bugs aren't supposed to hurt.

I'm still amazed that as distressed as he had to have been, he didn't scratch me with the front claws at all. I know I should have dropped a towel over him or something first but Ijust wanted to fix it right away.

What a good kitty.

Cats and their prey

We had a cat for years that couldn't stop herself from trying to catch toads. These toads apparently secreted something nasty and at least one a year kitty would bite one. She would then spend the next half hour looking like she had rabies as she foamed at the mouth. The toads weren't poisonous, at least, but you'd think she would only have tried them once.

Yup. Poor kitties, slaves to that hunting instinct.

The good side of this is that Piff has been less of a pain in the ass about wanting to get outside. :)

Like a stink bug?

I dunno.

Poor little guy. He's much less a pain in the ass about always wanting to go out now though.

Stink bugs:
http://www.ivyhall.district96.k12.il.us/4th/KKhp/1insects/stinkbug.html

or, yet larger scarier-looking spraying bug residing in your area (Mostly Harmless):

the Vinegaroon!!
http://www.petbugs.com/caresheets/M-giganteus.html

The vinegaroon sprays actual acetic acid (vinegar) in concentrations high enough to sting.

or something else entirely?

Bugs are my hobby so I am very curious!

Sorry Piffy got sprayed though! poor thing

It was like the ones in the top link, but about an inch long and very leggy. It got him good.

I know you're not supposed to just pick up an animal in pain but I did anyway and Piffy was so good even as scared and hurt as he was.

It shows a lot about your relationship of trust with the animal that he was able to be gentle when you picked him up.

One time my rabbit was scared by dogs (they were separated from him by glass windows) and he actually screamed when I picked him up! But he calmed down after I held him a while.

Nasty stink bug! We just saw one here the other day and I had to warn my little boy away from it!
