My dad's wife died last week. I can't say I liked her too much, but she did try, the last time I was down in Florida.

My dad's a mess. I'm almost thinking about dropping my classes this semester and going to see him.

We've been playing phone tag since the event but he keeps calling the minute I put my phone down or turn it off for classes and leaving messages where it sounds like he's crying and when I call back (like 7 minutes later this time) it goes to voice mail.

I really worry about him drinking. Or worse. Or suicide.

Thanks. I just--I wish her remission had lasted long enough for him to divorce her like 5 yrs ago. They weren't happy but he was all she had and he didn't know how to walk. And now he feels all guilty for not loving her and stuff and for letting her distract him from his own kids.

Oh, that is a really sucky situation. I'm quite sorry, for you as well as for him. I'm not sure I'd have any good advice for you, but I wish you all the best in figuring this out and finding a way to move on safely together as a family.

does he have any other family down there, or was there only his wife? widowhood is really hard (i can say from first-hand experience), especially if one is isolated. going to see how he's doing might be a good idea, though it'd be a shame to lose credits for those classes. please let us know what you decide to do.

His mother and sister live in town. He sees them pretty regular. His son works for him.

I think he's having problems because he didn't like her very much for over half their marriage, but he felt so obligated when she was sick and now he feels guilty and mournful and all kinds of stuff.

wow, that's a really heavy mix of emotions. (i had lots of guilt and regret to deal with, and it about drove me bonkers for a while.) it's good he's close to family, at least, so that they're there if he needs them. i'm sorry it's hard for him, and for you as you worry about him.

I don't know what to tell you. I'd see if you could take a few days off and it not go against you. Surely they have some policy for deaths even if you only want to be there for your dad.

I don't need either of these classes for my degree so it'd only be money I'd be losing. The summer session is so condensed that I'd miss too much even missing a week.

Honestly then go with your heart if it's something you're going to look back on and regret, do what you need to do.

Believe me I know money doesn't grow on trees but sometimes family isn't around quite as long as we wish they were.

My grandma died a few years ago and it was really hard for my grandpa. He´s still pretty lonely without her.

So I suck at knowing the right thing to say, but I sincerely hope things turn out alright. Instead of feeling guilt for not loving her at the end maybe he should think about how he was still there for her when she needed him. How he put her health above his own happiness... unless I'm completely misundertanding the situation...
