Went and got a new fur-baby.
This is Blue. He's unbelievably sweet. He's about half-grown. Maybe 6 months old? Just a little too old for his prime adoption age so I'm glad we got him. Found out that the local shelter does indeed put down unwanted cats when there's no more room in the cages, so I feel good about getting a not-tiny-cute-kitten.

Date: 2008-07-01 12:49 am (UTC)He looked really big and grown-up next to all the cute little baby kittens, but we got him home and he's like half piff's size so it should all be good.

Date: 2008-07-01 01:15 am (UTC)I kind of had my heart set on one of the smaller ones (halfway between Blue and the tiny kittens) but the hubby saw Blue and we both fell in love with him.

Piff is stalking him all "!!??!!"

Date: 2008-07-01 03:49 am (UTC)My husband found him in his cage and I fell right in love with him too. There was a kitten I'd been crushing on and sam was like "Are you gonna be heartbroken if we leave your kitten here?" And I said "Yeah, but I'd be heartbroken leaving this one too." So we took Blue.

Date: 2008-07-01 01:54 am (UTC)As it turns out, we put some effort into tracing his microchip and didn't manage to find owners, but we did find out from the people who put the chip in that he's actually only five or six, and his original name was Pirate. So Pirate it is. :)
(I was going to name him Winchester, too.)
In any event, yay for shelter adopting! And what a cute cat. :) I know our shelters are all totally full of cats at the moment- kittens fly out, but older cats only leave most of the time if they're lucky enough to find a foster home. Even with that turn over, they're putting a lot of cats down, so you definitely did a good thing. :)
(My aunt actually currently has two cats living in her garage because she can't take them in- already has a couple of house cats- but she doesn't want to take them to the shelter right now because they will just be put to sleep.)

Pirate Winchester. It's got a ring to it. :) Blue's whole name is officially either "Blue Note" or "Voodoo Blue." Or maybe both.

Date: 2008-07-01 07:32 am (UTC)Because you can't just be a pirate, you have to have a TITLE. :)
Although it was a nice surprise, yeah. (Perhaps not so much for our other dog, who is also 5 going on 6. She's probably thinking 'crap, I'll never get rid of him!' :) )
In the grand tradition of my Skillz at picking out shelter animals, however, he already needs a few hundred worth of dental work, because his teeth are AWFUL. One is even completely broken. (Which is probably why they thought he was 10.) Hopefully he will avoid reaching the record set by our last rescue dog, who probably cost us upwards of $5000 in the first few years, not including standard care items. (He had separation anxiety and trashed the house. And then he had a grand mal seizure in the middle of the night and needed emergency care and a year and a half of twice daily medication.)

Date: 2008-07-01 03:55 am (UTC)His little toes are like a grey-pink color. It's adorable. And his stripes go down his legs and tail and face but not-so-much on the body.
The guy at the pound had been all impressed with us for taking an "adult cat" but really. If he's got no personality problems (and he doesnt seem to) and he's been raised right, he's just like those kittens will be in a few months, and hey, we miss out on a few months of scooping stinky kitten poop. It's all win.

Date: 2008-07-01 04:19 am (UTC)Scratched at the carpet but got right with the scratching post as soon as we introduced it.
He doesn't play rough with hands or feet and he was gentle with Sam when he paniced on the way out of the shelter. I don't see anything wrong with him so far at all.
Gonna take him to the vet tomorrow. Make sure everything checks out.
I don't understand people who would raise a great cat and then take him to the pound. But I guess if they didn't fix their animals and had more than they could keep or find homes for it's the least they could do for him to teach him manners? I dunno.

Date: 2008-07-01 04:15 am (UTC)I'm sorry to hear about Lily, but I'm sure in time you'll love Blue just as much. I think you're right in that most people want tiny baby kittens, rather than 6 months or so. He seems young enough that he should be able to adapt well to his new home. Congratulations!

Date: 2008-07-01 09:09 pm (UTC)I'm so, so sorry about Lily. I missed your post about her while we were traveling. Though it looks like she pointed you to another really sweet soul who needs a home and a loving family. You can see the spirit and mischief just shining in his eyes.
I know that he's going to be a huge help in healing the hole you've all got in your hearts right now. :)
*hugs you hard*

Date: 2008-07-02 06:28 am (UTC)We had two sister cats from a rescue centre, this was a few years back, (sadly can't have cats now as have allergy to them.) Went for one cat and came back with two when we realised they were sisters and had been in the cattery for over six months. Never regretted it they gave us so much joy.
