So.  Scooping the litterboxes today, I discovered something very strange.

Apparently they've decided the one with no lid is the pee box and the one with the cover is the poop box.

What I wonder is how they worked this out between them.

LOL, Mine pees in the toilet and poops in the box. I tried to tell her she's got it backwards, but she seems quite proud of herself for differentiating.

Maybe the splash is distressing or something. Silly kitty. That's funny though. Do you have two toilets for her use? Maybe she'd use one for pee and one for poop? :)

Haha, don''t mention the two toilet things in front of my hubby. He'd probably install one just for her. She's not spoiled in the least. *raises eyebrows*

Teh cats, they are sooo strange. This is the first time we've had multiple boxes so this differentiation is odd to me.

My sister's cat Benny does the same thing and we always attributed it to the fact that he's a little touched in the head. lol The four other cats look at him like he's crazy.

Wow. That's um very polite and diplomatic of them. Heh heh. Maybe when there in the proverbial kitty johns they discuss these things using kitty telekinesis? Or maybe they discuss politics and the sports page? LOL. Too cute!

What strange little things. Did you always have two boxes or is the second one new? Are the boxes identical or different?

Oh, it's a little bit complicated...

See, I used to have no box, because my two cats were always going outside whenever they wanted. Then Misia died and I got 2 new cats and put one box downstairs and one upstairs, because I had to close the cat door.
One of them, Max, got used to living here already after 3 days, but the other one was feral and escaped after 4 weeks :-(

So I opened the door again.

Then I got 2 other cats a month ago: one pretty young and - again - one feral. The door closed again, I bought another box and put out all three of them (all three open). Until then there was no difference.
Then I put lid on one litterbox and since then I didn't notice any pee in it. And now that I brought home two feral babies of the feral cat last weekend, I bought another box yesterday and also a different sort of litter.

In the new one is only pee....

LOL

I have no idea how they use them - which one goes where etc.

Cats are simply wondrous... :-D

Heeee! We have two boxes--have since I got Lexi--and they seem to go back and forth on which box is prefered. Often one box will be nearly empty and the other full, and I can't tell any reason why. *scratches head*

With the "poop only" box, my cats do the same thing, and there's a simple answer, actually. The hood on the covered catbox traps ammonia from the pee inside it, and they don't like ammonia fumes any more than we do because it burns their eyes and whatnot. They're smart enough to figure out that if they don't pee in there then that won't happen. I don't know why they wouldn't poop in the other box though.
