Janelly's b-day
Apr. 29th, 2007 09:52 amYesterday was my b-day.
Went to Amtgard and saw a sign for a fabric sale on the way there. Paid $25 for about $200 worth of fabric. Mmmm, Silk.
Rath gave me a knife, but it was a "just because I like giving stuff to people" gift and not a b-day gift.
I had tasty tasty martinis and played with a sand-blaster. Etching metal is so incredibly cool. I want to play with all my resources to transfer patterns onto friskett now. Dude, and I bet I could use a liquid mask too and get smooth-flowing intricate designs. Oh, and I wonder if I can put ink into the sand-blasted parts before the metal's sealed with clear enamel. I really really want plate armor with my oak-and-leaf heraldry now.

Date: 2007-05-01 04:38 am (UTC)Etching sounds like an interesting hobby. My family likes doing things like that, too, and amongst us we cover a wide variety. My sister makes jewelry; our brother, and our dad are both very good artists. My mom does crafts galore-it's intimidating how much she can do, from quilting to tatting and everything in between. I mostly stick to embroidery, when I've the time (ha!). Between the lot of us, we get around creatively, but I don't think any of them have done metal-working. There's been a bit of pottery and statuary and such & my mom's thinking of trying stained glass.
I'm always on the lookout for patterns that transfer well to cloth, as it's difficult to get embroidery patterns-most stores have cross-stich, instead, which I find tedious in the extreme. *is annoyed* I've got several pattern books for free-hand stitchery, but a pre-printed pattern is *so* much easier to work with. For one thing, it lets you stop when you need to and pick it up later much more easily!
When you say "knife", do you mean a kitchen knife, or one for collecting? I love blades! I've forcibly stopped myself from acquiring any, because I do *not* need to add a bunch of swords, knives, stilettos, rapiers, broadswords, claymores...hell, bows and arrows, too...to the already monstrous collection of books and cd's that I have to tote around when I move. *sighs*
I'm not one for the martinis. Margaritas, now, I can get behind.
Happy B-day again.

Date: 2007-05-01 11:35 am (UTC)I'm a craft-a-holic. I do costume design and sewing, watercolor and pastels, jewelry beading, leather tooling, a tiny bit of embroidery (and I totally agree that cross-stitch is the devil).
Could you make your own cross-stitch patterns? Maybe get that iron-on-transfer paper for printers and photoshop whatever you want?
Oh, the knife is just a super-fancy box-cutter, really, but it's shiny and red and sorta sci-fi looking and really impressed the old ladies in my watercolor class. :)
Spar makes the tasty martinis, like appletini and some thing with cranberry, and the blue ones. super-tasty.
Thanks.
