Oh no, I don't think you're an idiot. It's this obscure little game--like around 1000 people in Texas, at most. It's nation-wide, but more popular in the south where mandatory armor (like in SCA) is too hot.
It started out as a live-action role-playing game with a fantasy theme, but for me and a lot of other people it's more like a light-contact sport. All the weapons are padded (padded is a relative term). Armor is optional (it adds to the number of times you can be hit before you're "dead").
