Okay. I'm getting the same fics on 4 or more different groups on a regular (hourly) basis it seems.

I need to trim down to one RPS group and supernaturalfics.

What ONE  J2/RPS (I don't want to lose jeff-fics) group would you stick with if you could only have one?  It's hard to tell which of them has more or less than the others with the mass cross-posters (yeah, I used to be one of those) obscuring the writers who only post on one or two.

Any advice?

EDIT: I'm down to 27 communities from 49.  Even though a bunch of those had been dead for a long long time, or were ones I wasn't watching, I do feel a lot of relief just having them gone.  I pulled it down to a few recc communities for SPN, the newsletter, supernaturalfic and super_real.  I think that'll do me.  For now, at least.

When I narrowed down my fic comms it was a hard decision for RPS. I kept super_real over the other general RPS fic comms because super_real has the most members (and I am primarily interested in SPN RPS). I tried to watch things like moderating and if there were lots of lag times for posting, but for me as only a reader of the comms, they all seemed pretty similar.

Good luck!

Yay! Thanks. I'm really looking for a community to keep reading, not necessarily to post to, so this works.

I just read so little fic from the summary nowadays (I read stuff that's recced to me and stuff at crack_impala and writers I already love that I see on the digest and that's about it) that seeing the same summary (or big picture) that didn't make me want to click on it the previous 18 times is getting annoying.

Would it help to cut all comms and just read the newsletter instead?

Sooooo tempted. Every now and then a summary will catch me.

I might have more writing time though if I cut some of the reading...

I might un-watch the coms for a week or so and see how it goes. I've got most of my favorite authors friended anyways.

I like spnstoryfinders because the summaries people write for the stuff they're looking for often has more of a hook than the summaries on the fic itself. I know I'm guilty of that too, with the lame summary.

good suggestion. I might give that a try, see if it saves my sanity. School is just leaving me less time to brouse.

LOL I'm the same way! Although now I try not to read the spnstoryfinders post on my flist because then there are a handfull of fics to read and that takes up a lot of time and I don't always have time right away and yeah lol

I look through the communities and all the summaries either don't say squat about the fic, or they say the same thing a dozen others do and clicking any of them feels like a crap-shoot.

With spnstoryfinders at least I know 1 other person liked that fic and a better idea what it's about.

But yeah. Time consuming. And lotsa good crack sometimes.

spnnewsletter is in my favorites center, I don't know what it might do to my friends page (I added it to my favs before I got an lj account and then never friended it (them? whatever)). I like it because it has a little bit of everything and generally lists really good fics. other than that? maybe super_real

That's two votes for super_real, so i'll keep them and move the rest off my watched list. It's just out of control, man. I joined some of them becuase I expected specialty stuff to show up there, but everything is everywhere and there's no point.

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate the input.

I know-it really annoys me to see the same damn fic getting posted to every comm I belong to, no matter how good it is. What's the point of starting specialty comms for top this, hurt that, crack whatever, if they all get the same fics? *is cranky*

You're better off, as a writer trying to keep *some* kind of control over your comments, on only posting to your lj. You'll get plenty of word-of-mouth recs, anyway. (And still have time for *me*, which is, of course, of paramount importance.)

What?! It seems reasonable to ME. *blinks*

Anyway. I think I'll be losing a few comms this weekend, too. I'm getting to where I have more fun talking to people than reading, most of the time, and the clutter of stuff on my flist that I don't read is getting in the way of what I'd like to.

I'd say, cw-rps, this way you get J2 and Jeff.

I ended up with super_real. I'll watch the spnnewsletter too and look for him in the pairings.

Thanks for the advice though.

I have like, mega-jillion filters for my lj. Ones for individual places that I go to all the time (like [livejournal.com profile] diabetes, ones for specific fandoms (like all things SPN), etc. I have a core group, which is what I usually view, and I also have a *gotta hurry gotta rush* group that just has the bare basics (my favorite peeps *chirp for me baby!*, spnnewsletter, spnstoryfinder, super_real, supernaturalfic and cw_rps). I get some cross posting, but its at a minimum and this way Im pretty sure Im not missing anything. Oh yeah, I do sn_crossovers, too).

And now I have to go find out why the computer wont allow me to use apostrophes and the slash key. Kinda hard to code with that last one, and not being able to use the first makes me look retarded.

I like--never quite got the use of filters down. And somehow they overlapped each other and I got all annoyed with it. I needed an easier to use method. I think cutting back to a relative handful of comms should work.

Hmmm, that is tricky. Crud in the keys?

No, believe it or not, it's something unique only to LJ. I don't know if I inadvertently push the wrong key, but it's done it before a couple of times and I can't un-do it until I completely close down the window that LJ is in and then go back in.

'Tis a puzzlement.

I hate it when that happens. People crosspost to 4, 5 and sometimes even 6 comms. I'd trim a few as well but then I'd miss on fics that don't get crossposted like crazy...

Your icon is sooo cute. Poor sammy.

I don't think I'll miss what I miss. If that makes sense. I've got a lot of authors friended.

I stick to the [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter. they watch most comms and rarely miss entries.

And I figure I can watch the pariings there to catch the JDM I might otherwise miss.

My only reading in this fandom comes through spnnewsletter and the people on my f-list, and thus far I don't feel like I'm missing a ton of neat stuff. But it's entirely possible that I spend too much time browsing random links as a procrastination tool when really I should be doing my homework...

It's also been driving me crazy - I'm getting about five repeat posts for fics, icons, vids.... It's taking me several hours just to scroll through my flist each day because half (two-thirds?) are repeat posts. You've done the wise thing. I should follow suit.

My favorite community is [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter.

It's all the fun of multiple comm's without the mess on the flist.
