Lilycat has mammary tumors. Breast cancer for cats.

Because of the stroke/blood clot thing she had and her advanced age, and whatever is wrong with her legs/hips that's got her on pain killers, the vet doesnt think she's a good candidate for surgery.

They're like a chain of beads down one whole side of her. She doesn't act like she's in pain yet.

We're just gonna watch her until it looks like she's hurting.

My poor old cat.

Thanks.

I think watching and waiting is hard. To pick that day where there won't be enough good ones left to make it worth living through for her.

I've really never had a pet get old. The other cat just died on us pretty suddenly. I'm not prepared.

not that the other cat 'just' died, as in recently--it was like 2 yrs ago, but when he went it was pretty quick.

thanks. It may be weeks or months, I think. I dunno. She's getting checkups every 30 days to see how she's doing.

I worry about calling it quits too early or too late.

That's how we were with our oldest cat. She was never in pain, but she lived to be 24. One of our other cats had to be put to sleep from having a tumor behind her eye. So I know how you feel. It's hard, but only do it if you think she's in pain.

Thanks. it could be a while still. The vet sees her every month to give her pills and make sure she's doing well enough.

Oh,I'm sorry to hear that. We lost one of our cats, Merlin, to kidney disease last summer and I still miss him. We have 4 other cats and I always worry about them getting sick. We also have a little lasa apso dog named Sally and she has tumors, too; they started out as one little hard, rock-like pellet under the skin of her belly, and she too is old and the vet said not a candidate for surgery; he said if it was a benign one it wouldn't grow or spread and she'd be okay but if it was the other kind it would spread and eventually infiltrate her organs and when she started being sick or in pain from it we'd have to put her to sleep. Well that was over three years ago and yes, the tumors are now spreading and you can feel them in her belly area and on her spine now. They have made her stiff and sore and lately she sometimes has trouble standing up and getting around, so I know we won't have much more time with her probably;when she shows signs of being in chronic, actual pain from it and is genuinely suffering, we will have to put her down. But for now she still eats and potties okay and she loves to go outside still and explore the neighborhood and even manages a little bit of a brisk trot still somedays; so we are just hanging on to her as long as we can, as she's 12 now and we've had her all her life and she is a well-loved member of our family.

Lily's went from one little rock to a whole string in like 8 weeks. And now they're not-so-little (peanut size). And proliferating.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I know how hard it is.

I've had to make a decision like this with my own beloved cat. There's nothing that can make this easier. She's obviously well loved and I'm sure she knows it. I'm so sorry.

will be 18 in March--he is all skin and bone with arthritis in all his joints but he has this indomitable spirit that keeps him soldiering on...I keep a sharp eye to see when he is ready to let go because he sure doesn't plan on passing away peacefully in his sleep.

I am so very, very sorry to hear this. I just went through this, so if you want to ask anything, let me know.

Here's a good page on what to do, when:

http://www.messybeast.com/euth.htm

If you scroll down to "What to do, when", it gives you body language signs to look for to see if your cat is in pain or ready to go.

Here's a thing about how cats feel pain, and some of the things they do:

It's so hard to know when that moment is. We have an old cat with failing kidneys and a thyroid condition, but she still eats like a horse and purrs when you pet her, and it's terrible trying to weigh the discomfort she's obviously in against how much she obviously wants to live. I hope however long you have with Lily is as good as it can be.

*hugs*

Poor Lilycat!

It's so hard to make that decision of when is the right time, but ultimately you don't want them to suffer and you have to be content in the fact that you have given them that much care and love that they have made it to old age.

Very sad though, poor Lilycat and poor you guys! :'(
