I don't have a horse in this race, but it's still making me sad to read the SPN/J2 fic-rec groups this year.
Like--are they reccing every single fic?  If so, it's not so much of a rec list as it is a recap of this weeks BB posts.
And if they aren't reccing every single fic, they're reccing so many that those that don't get mentioned might feel sad for being not good enough and all left out and stuff.  For some reason it feels exclusional this year.  Maybe I'm just in a weird mood...

I have been pleasantly surprised and totally let down by this years Big Bangs... But I get what you mean...

Almost every one I've read could have used a tighter edit...More words doesn't make a fic better. There are some really great fics in there, none-the-less.

LOL I am getting old and trust me I know what it's like with a new baby (I did it three times) But did you have a BB planned this year?

Heh, no, I didn't. I write much better with the instant gratification of chapter-by-chapter reviews. :)

I'm trying one of those book-in-a-month things to help me organize fic-writing so that there's a plot and ending and stuff to my writing, but I would still probably post as the chapters are done.l

With the baby, I've been leaving the laptop home and writing in little notebooks again. I've got about 8000 words of a hooker!jared fic done--if I can get towards an ending I'll start typing it up.

Now I started following your LJ after reading In From the Cold... I was just curious and BY ALL MEANS ignore me but I have an Ebook Community... Where writers can post their finished product either in as a PDF HTML or word document to be uploaded into Iphones, Ebook readers and the like... Think that you might be inderested in posting it or anything else that you may have to the site?

I just oopsed in my mind cause I just did the weekly bigbang rec at [livejournal.com profile] j2_rec. *lol*

But I know what you mean. I looked at some of the bigbang rec posts and was like "Huh? Seriously?"

And I know it's hard for you guys too, because it would be really weird not to recc any BBs at all.

Yeah it would be but seriously? We don't rec just to rec. There were a few weeks were it was really close to just rec only 3 stories because the other 15 stories that were posted that week just sucked big time and then ther were 4 good fic posted on two days that were really good.

It's kinda tough this years cause I think it's the triple amount of the last years so there are are really a lot which makes it hard to read through them fast enough. There are really good ones this year but oh boy, there are some stories that make you puke your guts out.

Huh. Guess i've been lucky. I haven't read anything bad this year, but a few weren't to my tastes...

Seriously, do you read (or at least start) every J2 fic that's written every day? That's amazing.

I've read a couple of really great BigBang's this year, but then I've also started a couple that I couldn't finish ... I was under the impression that all BigBang fics were supposed to have a beta but I've read a couple of really poorly edited fics - and one or two full of typos. And I don't just mean occasion typos, but 2 or 3 in a sentence!

I'm trying not to let the recs effect my reading choices but I have seen a couple of fics that I've already read that I agreed with wholeheartedly. (And I've read one or two that I didn't)

One of the problems is that new authors have new betas, for the most part, I would think.

I usually pay more attention to a friend saying "read this one fic" than a rec-list that has 5 of this weeks 7 recs on it...

And then when you're me and your bigbang isn't J2 it doesn't fit anywhere;)

Actually I was hoping to look at some recs for big bangs, I've been so bad about finding time to read them.

Heh. I have not read yours yet, but it's on my to-read-list. I was actually happy to see a Jeff pairing in there.

I'm way behind too. There's no way to read some of these in a day or even three. They're piling up. I've got one open that's 178,000 words long. HOLY crap!

I know I'm kind of a stranger here but can I just leap in and say...oh, god, yes. So many fics seemed to suffer from a complete lack of editing.

I wonder if it was hard finding good betas for this. So many betas were writers this year, and there were just so many fics, period. But yeah. There were a lot of typo/spelling type errors as well as "you don't need these 100 words" sections that a good beta could have helped with.

Not to mention the lack of conflict to drive a story. Although as a beta I can say from experience that one is not always listened to.

yea I have no confidence in my stuff and I'm so far behind in reading the bigbangs that I just don't listen to the recs. *shrugs and tries to smile, too sad to really do it* guess you have to be a big shot in the fandom to get any kind of recognition.

LUCKILY you are one of them and I love your stuff!!

Honestly, I'd have a hard time putting my stuff up against such--apples-to-apples comparison for BB too. no matter how many reviews it got,it wouldn't be the most and I'd keep wondering why or what I should have done different or whatever. Rollerball was my first fic for a challenge and I know it wasn't the most awesome movie to make a J2 from and still I was sort of sad at the reviews. I'm proud of that fic and sorry for it at the same time. I don't think any amount would be enough when compared to others like that.

I think I'll keep writing for my f-list first and foremost and cross-posting when stuff is done like I did for In From the Cold.

I agree. Sometimes you just have to remind yourself to write for yourself and that's it...

I try to avoid community rec lists, unless I am in the mood for something specific and I'm feeling a little desperate. Otherwise I tend to stick with a few individual people who consistently rec good fics. I was a little disapointed by some of the bb -- like a totally great premis butchered by bad grammar.
On a moderately related topic: I recently graduated from school and we had a portfolio show. One of the students in my class had people looking at the first two pages of her book and then running away from her booth. When I went to see what the issue was (because srsly, these people looked traumatized) I couldn't believe what I saw, "Here is an esample of a corrsat I maid for a clint, she thought it was vary speshul...I lef this to make un till last cause it is totally, like, hard." English is her only language and she had her portfolio printed a week ahead of time.
Vary Spechul indeed -- SPELL CHECK WOULD HAVE CAUGHT THAT.
Me? Rant? Noooooooooo.

I usually read more fics off of spnstoryfinders than I do the rec lists. I figure if it was good enough for someone to want to find it again that it's got some redeeming factor.

I'm pretty good at ignoring typos or whatnot but wow. Some of them are rough. And now that I'm paying attention to "Hmm, are there typos in the first screen of text" I'm seeing them everywhere. Damnation.

Wow. Spechul is right. Ouch.
