My slow-cooker is huge. Adjust accordingly.

5lb pork roast
1/2 red onion, sliced
5 sticks celery, sliced
1 lb green beans, broken bite-size
2 handfuls mushrooms, sliced
1 cup water
1 cube veggie bulion
1 Granny Smith apple, cored and sliced fine

1/8 tsp each of
salt
pepper
rosemary
parsley
sage

put pork in pot and add the rest on top of it. Save the apple for last and put that on the very top.
Cook 5 hrs.

OMG tender. I never had a taste for pork before but this was amazing.

Mmmm, sounds nummy. I need a new crock pot. My old one is, well...old. Ancient really. Plus the lid is broken. Maybe it's time for an upgrade!

Yeah the broken lid makes it not work right.

I forgot the secret ingredient.

1 Granny Smith apple, cored and sliced fine and put on top of everything else as it goes into the cooker.

Oh, and when you get a new crock pot, look for the kind where the glass part comes out and you can wash it without the cord-part getting wet. That's awesome.

Seconded! It makes cleaning *so* much easier!

Your recipe for a roast is almost identical to the one I've been using for years, only you add an apple. I've got to try that. When you say to put it on last, about how long before you turn off the heat?

It goes in at the same time as everything else, just on top so the flavors leech down through everything. Or something. It may have just been pretty that it had the apple there. :)

I like doing the roast sort of low-carb. It came out tasty.

My hardest problem when I put recipes on LJ is translating "Um, this much?" into measurements. :)

I'm a very instinctive cook. I went through the spice cabinet smelling stuff and decided what to put in.

Yeah, I re-read that and I was kinda, "D'oh! You put everything in *at once*!" In the past when I've made roasts I use things like potatoes (which I suppose would ruin the low-cardness (I guess it's a word?) of it all...) and cabbage where if you cook them for too long they'll end up overcooked and mushy, so you stagger what you put in.

As far as spices go I'm a bit of a coward unless a recipe specifically tells me to use them; I stick with salt, pepper, garlic, and, if I'm feeling brave, a bay leaf.

It's all good. :)

Yeah, mush is no good. I had squash to add at the end but didn't have the room to put it in.

I'm bad at timing this cooker thing. I always start it at 3-4 in the afternoon. Doh.

Try these spices. mmmmm, gooood.

The apple does mush to nothing, but it flavors everything else.

Sounds tasty. I usually do one whole white onion, a couple of large carrots, four or five medium red potatoes, four stalks celery, and a couple of diced Roma tomatoes. For spices, two cloves minced fresh garlic, half teaspoon salt, half teaspoon black pepper, 1/8 teaspoon each parsley, sage, rosmeary, thyme, and tarragon. Very traditional, very southern. I'll have to try the apple thing sometime... I definitely like the sweet from the carrots, tomatoes, and onion!

That's a little carby for our tastes. I'll have to try the cloves though. This, with the red onion and the apple turned out fairly sweet.

I am a Janelly of all trades, baybee!

I think one of my favorite accomplishments was fixing the gas lever on my car (that's the part inside the hood that moves when the gas pedal is pushed. Possibly named something else officially) with a little piece from my archery kit and a chilton's manual.

I was thrilled when I changed the little flapper-flush mechanisim in my toilet all by myself. I've learned to put the fluids in my car, though I've not had to change a tire yet. I understand the principle but...*is nervous*

These are the practical kinds of things that I wish somebody had taught me, growing up. Now, as an adult, I feel handicapped by my lack of experience in so many things. It's irritating and makes me angry with myself.

I'd love to take some craft classes. Archery was also something that always interested me; though I'd have to do a lot of arm exercises before I had the strength to pull anything more than a kid's bow. Brushing up my Spanish has been a long-term goal, but my memory's kinda shaky and I'm not sure how much I'd grasp, any more. Damn hobbies all cost money, too, which isn't wise for me to be spending right now. I really need to cut the book-buying out, too. :(

I recently learned how to change my windshield wipers. \o/ Small steps, but they're big to me.

Awesome. I haven't done any plumbing stuff.

I can put fluids in my old car (not the Impala. It's confusing under there). I can jump-start and change a tire.

When Kendra came to us she couldn't even wash laundry. She had no life skills at all at all. I'm teaching her to cook more than ramen and garden and sew and stuff.

Craft classes are awesome. I took one on leatherworking and i keep wanting to take one for beading. I took pottery at the local crafter's guild.

Archery is also very cool. I like shooting moving human targets more than fixed ones. More adrenaline because if I don't hit them with the foamy arrow they'll hit me with the foam-covered stick.

I speak no foreign languages. At all.

I actually started a recipe-sharing lj, way back when I first found lj, to have a place to practice learning that wasn't fandom related. I haven't posted anything there in forever...I need to get on that, but I'm usually so tired in the evenings, it's all I can do to answer my mail and make a few comments.

You would not believe the number of cookbooks I have. *I* don't believe it,myself. Using them is one of my goals for this year.Maybe.*shifty eyes*
